It's harder than you think, you need to ignore half the playerbase that just wants to destroy and gank all day long tanking the economy, they are also usually the loudest ones. (That and they always say players instead of characters) That said based on what they shared they absolutely mean characters not players as that would constitute far far more than a 40% increase. However once the game began to pick up in popularity following their f2p release they began to be more open about numbers. There was a time when they were struggling where they did make active moves to try to hide and obfuscate the numbers (going as far as to restrict how much of the leaderboards were shown). (Honestly probably a little bit lower since I'm sure more players who pick up the game go with the steam client over the normal one now that that's an option so the ratio is probably more steam heavy than it used to be). Assuming that ratio hasn't changed drastically that puts them at around 10k concurrent on average. Yeah it's around that, they made a post a bit back about their current actual player numbers and the ratio using the steam client vs regular client and people were able to extrapolate around what the current total concurrent players were. It's, in my opinion, the perfect MMO because you actually play a ROLE in it as opposed to everyone being a decked out hero who has to save the world by killing rats.
There is literally something for every single person to do in Albion and the best part is that every single person matters because each and every person contributes in one small way to the community, the market, and the production of some sort of material that keeps the game alive. Let me tell you, there is no thrill greater.
PvP actually matters because gear and loot can be dropped. There is pve content galore compared to launch and it is all mixed with the potential of PvP bursting out of nowhere.
Whole you can run solo anywhere in the game, you are publicizing a death wish if you don't run with a squad of your best buddies, all saddled up and ready to hunt in the Outlands. At the end of my life, if my grandchildren ask me what my favorite gaming activity was with other people, id say Albion Online.
